T’other day I hung one of my handmade scarves over a blouse, for want of a spare hanger, That looks good, I thought, and it gave me an idea to decorate the blouse in the same way I would make a scarf.
I selected some colours of selvedge that I could use and set them aside. Last night I was having an existential crisis, “woe, is me, what’s the point of making stuff, why bother etc ” and I realised I needed a soothing , repetitive task to calm my mind. Previously I would have had a handstitching project to hand, be it for Stitch Meditation or a 100 Day Project, or a collaboration but at the moment I have no projects on the go. I went into my workshop and grabbed the nearest likely looking object which happened to be the blouse, and the selvedge.
I fetched some red thread and a long needle and set about some “Heads Down No Nonsense Mindless” stitching .
(Prize for the first person to comment below with the name of the band who’s song I am partially quoting there)
EDITED TO ADD : prize won by Sue Turner , here is the song
I positioned and folded the selvedge as I stitched, with the blouse in my lap, I didn’t look to see where it was going.
So the next day it was interesting to see what I’d actually done .
EDITED TO add : by the way, it worked, I went to bed with a calm heid on me 🙂

Last night I did another couple of hours of stitching , gratuitously, for the heck of it, I wasn’t woeful or nowt. This has reminded me that I am always more content if I have some handstitching on the go, and it’s a bonus if I end up something that I can wear. Or sell.
Perhaps my lack of a project was connected to my dissatisfaction. Might be time for another collaboration. Ennui port in a storm, eh?
So the scarf/blouse thing didn’t happen, but I’m happy with how it turned out , and I can use that idea for something else.
Ps. did you know I have a GIVEAWAY happening over on my Facebook page? It’s pinned to top of page and finishes at 9pm on 26th October.
Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias !
I love the idea of mindless stitching and being abstract. I need to practise that!
